Can anyone become a distance runner?

Posted in Marathons | 4 comments

Question: Can anyone become a distance runner?
I run for fitness. However, “running” usually involves quite a bit of walking since I am not really training for anything, just trying to stay in shape. Recently I have decided that I want to maybe try running a half marathon. I will start out with a couple of 5k’s. I have run two or so miles in the past with no problem. Even so, there are days when I feel I will never be able to run any sort of long distance. I almost feel like I am physically unable. I know some of it is laziness and not really feeling like pushing myself. Can anyone train themselves to be a distance runner? Is there anyone out there like me who thought they would never be able to do it but pushed through? And if so, how did you do it??

Tips for a non-athletic person to become a runner?

Question: Tips for a non-athletic person to become a runner?
I have been wanting for a while now to ‘take up’ running but have been dragging my feet. I am very out of shape, over-weight and never been the slightest bit athletic. It seems kind of daunting to go from zero working out to running a marathon (not that I’d EVER try that). I’m looking for some tips on how to get started, what kind of work-outs to do, some tips/resources/etc because I’m lost. I don’t want to just “go run”… knowing myself I’d be ill-equipped in one way or another and pull a muscle or injure myself or something.

Long story short: Any tips for someone going from hardly any working out to some sort of running schedule? Anything can help. Thanks!

Did You See This Nude Runner?

Question: Did You See This Nude Runner?
A woman was having a daytime affair while her husband was at work. One rainy day she was in bed with her boyfriend when, to her horror, she heard her husband’s car pull into the driveway.

“Oh my God – Hurry! Grab your clothes and jump out the window. My husband’s home early!”

“I can’t jump out the window. It’s raining out there!”

“If my husband catches us in here, he’ll kill us both!” she replied. “He’s got a hot temper and a gun, so the rain is the least of your problems!”

So the boyfriend scoots out of bed, grabs his clothes and jumps out the window! As he ran down the street in the pouring rain, he quickly discovered he had run right into the middle of the town’s annual marathon, so he started running along beside the others, about 300 of them.

Being naked, with his clothes tucked under his arm, he tried to blend in as best he could. After a little while a small group of runners who had been watching him with some curiosity, jogged closer.

“Do you always run in the nude?” one asked.

“Oh yes!” he replied, gasping in air. “It feels so wonderfully free!”

Another runner moved a long side. “Do you always run carrying your clothes with you under your arm?”

“Oh, yes” our friend answered breathlessly. “That way I can get dressed right at the end of the run and get in my car to go home!”

Then a third runner cast his eyes a little lower and asked, “Do you always wear a condom when you run?”

“Nope……..just when it’s raining.”
