Dog-Gone Good: Goldendoodle Runs Half Marathon for Cancer Research

Posted in Marathons | 24 comments

There was a last-minute entry in Sunday’s Maryland Half Marathon to benefit the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center — a 3-year-old goldendoodle named Dozer, who escaped through an invisible fence in his yard to join the more than 2000 people running by his house, which was near mile 5 of the race. Runners reported seeing the dog at several points along the way, and he crossed the finish line with other runners at 2 hours and 14 minutes. Dozer’s owner didn’t know what had happened to him and was frantically looking for him until he returned home Monday morning. He had muddy feet and was limping. After a quick trip to the vet, Dozer is fine, his owner reports, but he won’t be running any half-marathons any time soon. This week, the race co-chairmen, Michael Greenebaum and Jon Sevel, gave Dozer a medal — and some dog treats. Dozer even has his own runner’s page, where people can donate to raise money for cancer research at the Greenebaum Cancer Center. Dru Ha Marathon Training (Part 1) with Celebrity Trainer Mark Jenkins

Part 1 of the two part training series as Dru Ha readies himself for 2011′s ING: New York City Marathon on November 6th. In this clip, Dru Ha explains why he is running, about “Run 2 Remember” NYC Alzheimers Association chapter team, and his experience training with celebrity trainer Mark Jenkins. Unfortunately due to Mark’s busy schedule training celebrities such as Diddy, D’Angelo, & Mary J. Blige, he has to defer the training sessions with another “celebrity trainer” which was documented in Part 2 of this series. I just ran a marathon and want to train for a triathlon now. How much time do I need to train?

Question: I just ran a marathon and want to train for a triathlon now. How much time do I need to train?
I am hoping to compete in a triathlon the second week of August, and I am wondering if this is enough time to train for the swim and bike portions of the race.

Answer by Jay Jimenez
I guess my question for you is “What is your baseline level of fitness/endurance in the disciplines of swimming and cycling AND what distance of triathlon are you considering?”

Assuming you have ZERO experience with swimming and cycling, I would say that a sprint distance race is easily doable in the time you have. An Olympic distance would be a stretch but possible. Anything beyond that would be difficult without considerable hard core training. If you could currently swim 500-1000m freestyle continuously and cycle for 20-30 miles, then a 70.3 could be done in that time frame and an Olympic would be a breeze.

Having done 3 marathons and 4 multisport events, I can tell you triathlon is so much more fun. I’m currently training for my first full Ironman. Hope you decide to take the plunge.
