half-marathon question?
Question: half-marathon question?
I got a letter through the post today about a half-marathon taking place on 23 october (2 and a half months away) in my local area, and it looks like something I would like to do.
However, I don’t know whether 2 and a half months is enough to prepare for it or not…
I hardly play sports, and when I do I get tired quite easily, but I cycle semi-regularly. I’m medium height, 17 years old (male), slim, and have quite a high metabolism. I have almost no experience of distance running before and have never “went out on a run”. Therefore I’m having doubts whether, realistically, I can prepare to run the half-marathon in this short amount of time.
I would like your own views and some advice cheers

From what you say, two and a half months won’t be enough.
Realistically you will be running for around 2 hours, if you walk part of it, then you could be looking at 3 hours or even more.
If you really want to do it, then it would be possible for you to get round, but you would have to be dedicated to do it, and you won’t be fit enough to do it comfortably.
If you factor in training lost if you pick up any injuries, then it’s beginning to look even less likely.
Try this test to see if you could do it.
Get yourself a good pair of trainers, and see how long you can run at an easy pace. If you can carry out a conversation, then that is fast enough. If you get out of breath you are running too fast, so slow down.
If you can manage to run for half an hour with your current level of fitness, then you are in with a chance.
If you can do that, then email me through my profile, and I’ll give you a training schedule that will get you round, assuming that you can follow it without any injuries.

Question: What can I do to get in shape for a half-marathon in April?
Like, can anybody give me a month by month plan to be in shape to run a half marathon at a 9 minute mile pace? My coach and I are planning on running one in April. Any tips are greatly appreciated, except for stupid ones like “run”. (I kinda figured that one. Im talking weight training and dieting type of stuff. I know I need to run everyday, geniuses.) [That was just for the potential stupid answers I may/maynot get.]

Www.runnersworld.com has many good running/training plans and articles to help you train for almost any distance. I just ran my first half marathon on 9/13, and it was really fun (tough, but a lot of fun). Good luck!

Considering you’re not a runner and have no experience, two and a half months is not enough time. However, you can train in two and a half months for a 5k or 10k. You should be able to run about 30 minutes without stopping in order to train for a 5k.
Start with an interval run: Walk 2 minutes, jog 2 minutes and alternate for 30 minutes.
Repeat this exercise day after day, until you feel that you can jog more than walk, then you will be built up to jog a whole 30 minutes. From there, work on your speed a bit. Then, you can start adding more mileage as you get adjusted to running.
Also, look for examples on runners’ websites. Sometimes they have plans you can follow. I prefer www.runnersworld.com.
If you start training now, you might be prepared by next year to complete a half marathon, or sooner.
Cheers.

Question: New to running, following a plan and I need help with some terms? (Nike+ Coach (NWM for Half-Marathon)?
For example, I don’t understand “Run 8 Miles. Run 2×2 miles, with 3 minutes recovery, each 2 miles repetition should be faster than the previous. Run 2 miles controlled, 2 miles warm-up, and 2 miles cool-down.” What do they mean by “controlled?
Also, I have to run 8 Miles total, but 2 miles controlled + 2 miles warm up + 2 miles cool down = 6 Miles… how do I get 8 Miles out of that? Or do I do 2 Miles twice (2×2 miles = 4 controlled miles), + 2warm up + 2 cool down, that would = 8 Miles but they specifically say 2 miles controlled… Argh, I’m so confused!
And do I have to do it in that order? Controlled miles, and THEN warm-up miles? Wouldn’t it make more sense to warm up before?
Are my 2x2miles the “controlled run”? 2×2 miles = 4 miles, right, with 3 minutes recovery pace IN BETWEEN those two sets of 3 miles?
I still don’t get out to get a total of 8 miles in that… please help me!!
Ugh, I must really be challenged not to understand that first answer.
2 miles warm up (2miles)
+ 2×2 miles (4miles)
+ 2 miles controlled (2 miles)
+ 2 miles cool down (2 miles)
= 2 + 4 + 2 + 2 = 10 miles
I still don’t quite get how to get 8 miles… Ack!

2 mile warmup (run at an easy conversational do-no-harm pace)
2×2 miles (run 2 miles, rest 3 minutes, run 2 miles — I’m thinking aerobic pace or 70-79% max heart rate)
2 miles controlled (means 2 miles at tempo pace or 80-89% max heart rate)
2 miles cool down (conversational do-no-harm pace)
Total 8 miles
See, that wasn’t so hard.

Question: Running a half-marathon?
I’m not the best runner, but I can walk super far. BUT I think it’d be a neat goal to shoot for to run 13.1 miles. SO I want any and all tips on how to prepare for this. Please don’t give me the one word answer: “Run”
I’d really like to know if there’s more to it. I’ve got quite a bit of time: 7 or 8 months. THANKS

HI Mate, going after your first half marathon in 8 months? You really need to start building your endurance base by doing more easy long runs.. 8-12km. Dun start doing some much during the first week…
I want you to imgain a paramaid… you should be starting little, peak and as you get closer to your race, lower your training volume… (volume means distance ran)
A good indication is first 3-4 months slowly build from 30km to 70km a week… You will hear people running more then 100km a week… but thats with a lot ofexperience and running years. Get by your first 21km and you can decide further.
Dun forget gym work because you require good skeletal muscles to last the distance and preventing injury.
Lastly, do join a running groupfor workouts and company… long distance training can be lonely after a while… I assure you that….
I hope all these small tips help because this is a big topic…and we can talk forever…
