Is a single speed bike normal to use when in a triathlon?

Question: Is a single speed bike normal to use when in a triathlon?
I dont have a bike currently and was wondering if i should just get a one speed to use, or is that what everyone does anyways when entering a triathlon? I havent ever entered a triathlon.

see what everyone else has. road race bikes. some are tri specific.if your not expecting to win first overall use what ever you want to perticapate. but if you want to have achance of staying with everyone else you’ll need a multi gear bike.

  1. No tri-specific bicycle is a single speed. A road racing bicycle is a suitable substitute to a tri-bike. The difference will be the geometry (how the frame positions the rider) as the tri-bike is all about aero riding posture. You can add aero bars to road handlebars.

  2. any road bike will do
    one with gears
a single speed would be very wrong
unless you just *want* to lose

    wle.

  3. I would not say it is normal but it can be done. I use a fixed gear for Time Trials and I beat all the local pro triathletes. If it is hilly or a technical course this would be a bad idea.

  4. NO do not use a single speed bike in a triathlon you need to have the variety of gears to accommodate the different terrains. if you use this bike you will kill your legs and have nothing left for the run. and that is not fun

  5. Do not use a single speed for a triathlon. You will never reach your full cycling potential with a single speed bike. Imagine you are on a stretch of road with screaming tailwinds. Your single speed will be limited to around 18 mph, while all your competitors will be cranking along in high gear and passing you at 35 mph. Do the math.
Please nix the single speed, buy a multi-speed bike for road riding and racing.
